St Dominic Catholic Primary

If we live by truth and in love, we shall grow in Christ

A creative time in Year 1!

This week, we were very excited to have our own local artist Mrs Whatnall visit our class. She came to inspire us to create art in the style of César Manrique. Mrs Whatnall shared interesting facts about the artist, building on what we have been learning. The children had the opportunity to experiment with string design, mix sand with primary colours for texture and make their creations ‘pop’!

In Maths, the children have been exploring doubles and odd and even numbers. They have used the ‘tens’ frames and a number line to support and have been finding out whether numbers can be shared equally.

We have started a new text in English called ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’. The children have compared the main character in the story to Jack from the original traditional tale. They have also been recognising nouns in the text and next week will learn about verbs. This will support the children in constructing sentences effectively.

During Science, the children have been using scientific vocabulary to describe the properties of materials. They have also been investigating the best material to use to make an umbrella.

In RE, we have started our new topic on ‘Meals’ and have been thinking about the special meals that we share as a family. Throughout this topic, we will be learning about the special meal that is prepared during Mass and The Last Supper that Jesus shared with His friends.

Next week, we begin the season of Lent, and we will be having a short service in class with the distribution of ashes from Father Michael or Canon Tony.

Have a lovely weekend!
